HyperTech Power Coil Kit ~ Cap/Coil/Rotor
~ Part # HYP-4052 ~ $71.95 I considered the MSD setup which is nice and reliable, but then, at the recommendation of 3rd Gen Member Jim86IROC, I bought the HyperTech unit. It's an all in one kit with no separate ignition module or separate coil like the MSD Blaster Coil, plus, at 53K output it puts out 8K more volts than the 45K MSD Blaster Coil and 16K more than the stock 37K Coil. Installation was 15 minutes. Two pieces of advice: On the night before your work consider soaking the 4 small bolts holding down the cap with penetrating oil.....just in case. Also don't rely on your memory, tag your spark plug wire locations. HyperTech AFPR ~ Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator ~ Part # HYP-4002 ~ $74.69 From Summit Racing No particular reason I chose this unit, I like to stick within brands, however it was a very clean install. Nice brushed aluminum, comes with Plenum Gaskets, (you will have to remove the Plenum), a security torks bit, (which you will need), and good instructions. You will need a fuel gauge, unhook the vacuum line from the FPR to the Plenum and plug the Plenum where the line went, hook your fuel gauge up to the Schrader Valve and register your fuel pressure. Upon install of the AFPR then set pressure to that reference amount and fine tune for best operation, usually 42 to 48 psi. Derale Adjustable Fan Switch ~ Part #
DER-16759 ~ $39.75 The stock F-Body cars have a 195° thermostat installed and the fan switch comes on at app. 228°, and this is too hot. Even though it is a popular modification, there is evidence that a 160° thermostat is too cold for these engines and it renders your heater useless. The ideal temp may be a 170° thermostat, although a little harder to find, with an option of a 180° if you want more heat in colder climates. You should drill 4 small holes in the thermostat housing to eliminate "hot pockets" in your coolant flow. Once you have made this mod the Derale unit is a good addition. It allows you to tailor your cooling fan(s) turn on, without requiring a custom chip. It is recommended you read an article on Third Gen by "Willie" for a detailed look at modifying your cooling system parameters. MSD Super Conductor Wire Set - 8.5mm Plug
Wires ~ Part # MSD-31199 ~ $78.95 There are a lot of good wire sets out there on the market, but I read nothing but good on the MSD wires and customer service they offer. This is a nice compliment to the HyperTech Coil Kit. I opted for the Universal Set as I wasn't sure of my preferred routing. Suggestions would be change them one at a time and get a "real" spark plug cap crimper, even though they come with one you use with a vise. TB Airfoil ~ Throttle Body Airfoil ~ Part
# 22100 ~ $29.95 Since the verdict is still out on whether a TB Airfoil offers any "real" improvement in performance on unmodified engines, I was a little hesitant on spending the big bucks on a TPIS or other high dollar unit. I did however think GM was a few sandwiches short of a picnic regarding the design of the air entrance into the throttle body. If for no other reason than cosmetic the airfoil lends a finished look to the TB and in my opinion it sure can't hurt anything. |
